What companies are showing beyond the chatbot screen
At Meta Connect on September 24, Meta described plans to bring its Muse agent to AI glasses and introduced Muse Charm as a small device for talking with the agent. Meta's announcement says it will share more details later; a demonstration or product reveal should not be mistaken for general availability. The same event also showed new glasses and spatial-computing hardware.
At IFA, Samsung presented a 'Companion to AI Living' vision spanning phones, televisions, and home appliances. That is an ecosystem direction from the company, not one standalone roleplay companion. The word companion is being used broadly across products that may assist with everyday tasks rather than sustain a fictional character.
A wearable changes when and where a conversation can happen
A phone app waits for a person to open it; a wearable can make voice interaction available while the phone stays away. A camera-equipped device may also bring visual context into the exchange. That can reduce interaction steps, but it makes microphone activation, camera indicators, bystander awareness, and control of background processing more important.
The form factor does not decide whether the interaction feels like companionship. A headset, home screen, or keychain can host a task assistant, a conversational character, or both. The product's behavior and the user's control still determine what kind of experience it is.
Separate a product roadmap from a feature you can use today
When reading a hardware announcement, sort each item into three buckets: available now, limited rollout or preview, and planned or demonstrated. Check the region, compatible devices, account requirements, subscription, and shipping date. A live demo can establish that a scenario was shown, but not that the same capability is ready for every buyer.
The current Meta and Samsung posts describe product directions and launches that may change. Verify the linked company's latest availability notice before making a purchase or writing a comparison. Neither announcement establishes that the device is a dedicated AI roleplay companion.
The checklist for always-available AI hardware
Before enabling an always-nearby assistant, find the microphone and camera controls, the activation indicator, whether processing happens locally or in the cloud, and how to review or delete recordings. Also check how the assistant handles other people who may be in a room or appear in a camera view.
If what you want is collaborative text roleplay, an ambient wearable may solve a different problem than a companion chat app. Our guides on image input and privacy cover those distinctions; the Jess homepage describes a Discord-first alternative interaction format.
