Read the policy for the product you use
Start with the official privacy policy and terms for the exact website or app. Check the operator name, data categories, stated uses, service providers, retention language, user rights, and the route for contacting support. Policies differ and may be updated, so note the review date.
Do not assume that “private chat” means chats are never processed or reviewed. Marketing language describes a product experience; the privacy notice describes the provider’s stated data practices. If the policy is vague about a concern that matters to you, treat that as unresolved.
Map the accounts and third parties
An AI companion may rely on an app-store account, a social sign-in, a membership provider, a messaging platform, or payment processing. Make a simple map of which account holds the chat, which account grants a plan, and where billing support sits.
For a Discord-and-Patreon workflow, the user may need to connect Patreon access to Discord separately. Review official connection instructions, use the right account, and verify which permissions are requested before authorizing.
Find the controls before you need them
Look for chat deletion, account deletion, memory editing, export, blocking, message requests, and subscription cancellation. Try to locate those controls while you are calm rather than after you have built a long story or need to remove an account.
If a service offers memory, ask what information is stored and whether you can inspect, correct, or remove it. Saved facts can improve continuity, but user control and clear explanations matter too.
A practical checklist
- What data is collected and for what stated purpose?
- Can conversations or accounts be deleted?
- Can stored memory be viewed or corrected?
- Which providers handle sign-in, billing, or chat access?
- How do you contact support or report a concern?
Use safer habits during a trial
Start with an invented character and fictional details. Do not include passwords, financial information, private records, or someone else’s identifying details. Be cautious about uploading real-person images or sharing content that you would not want associated with your account.
Keep your account secure with unique credentials and the platform’s available security features. A service’s privacy policy does not protect a password that you reuse elsewhere.
What to review for Jess
Jess’s site describes a Discord DM experience and Patreon-connected membership tiers. Before joining, review the plan details, Discord’s privacy settings, Patreon’s account connection instructions, and Jess World’s published privacy information. Each service controls a different part of the flow.
The Jess plans page is available before the Patreon authorization link, so you can review the tiers first. Connect only the accounts you intend to use, and use official links from Jess World.
