The quick answer: choose by how you want to start a chat
Choose Character.AI if you want to explore a character-discovery experience and may also create and publish characters of your own. Its current creator guide documents character profiles, greetings, tags, visibility settings, and voice options. Choose PolyBuzz if you want to browse or create AI characters and want to check its documented text and voice-input options; its terms describe both. Those are differences in documented workflow, not a head-to-head quality test.
Neither platform is a universal winner. The better fit depends on the characters you find, the controls you need, and how the actual chat feels on your device. This comparison uses official product and help pages checked October 2, 2026; features and policies can change.
Character discovery and creation
Character.AI’s help center explains a creator flow with a name, avatar, greeting, tags, visibility, and optional profile details. Tags are described as a way to help people discover characters. This makes creation and discovery part of the comparison—not just the chat window.
PolyBuzz’s terms say users can create AI characters and chat with characters made by themselves or other users. The terms also describe browsing the web service and creating characters from user-provided images or scenarios. The exact catalog and interface can vary, so check the live experience rather than assuming every feature is identical between web and app.
Voice: check what ‘voice chat’ means on each service
Character.AI documents both Character Voice and two-way Character Calls; its help pages distinguish the features and explain where they are available. PolyBuzz’s terms describe interaction by text or voice input. These descriptions are not necessarily equivalent: voice input, generated speech, and a live two-way call are different capabilities.
If audio matters to you, verify the specific mode in the current app or website: can you speak and hear a response, is it available in your region and on your device, and does the chosen character support it? Don’t compare a voice-input mention with a two-way call as if they were the same feature.
Read the age and account rules before signing up
The services publish different age rules. Character.AI’s Safety Center says users must be at least 13, or 16 in Europe. PolyBuzz’s current terms state that the service is for adults 18 and older. These are provider-published policies; check the current terms for your country before creating an account.
PolyBuzz’s terms describe guest use and list Google, Apple, Facebook, or email as account routes for full access. Character.AI’s current Safety Center describes signing up with an email address and birthday, while its help center documents login troubleshooting. Check what the live flow asks you for; do not rely on an older comparison page for sign-in details.
A five-minute test that makes the choice clearer
Open the same kind of scenario on each service and use a short fictional character brief. Give the character two details, change the scene, then ask about one earlier detail. Notice whether you can find a character you actually want to continue with, whether the chat stays coherent for your needs, and how easy it is to correct a misunderstanding.
Keep the comparison fair: use the same prompt, note the date and whether you are on web or mobile, and record any account or plan requirement you encounter. This is a personal fit check, not a benchmark. Don’t infer privacy, memory quality, or long-term consistency from one short session; read the services’ current privacy and safety pages for those questions.
A practical checklist
- Can I quickly find a character that fits the story I want?
- Can I make or customize a character the way I expect?
- Does the voice mode I want work on my device?
- What age, account, and plan requirements apply?
- Can I find clear privacy, safety, and account controls?
How Jess differs from both
Jess uses a Discord-first companion format: private DMs with Jess, plus the separate Jess World community and published membership tiers. That is a different workflow from browsing a large catalog of user-created characters. It may suit someone looking for one continuing companion in Discord; the Jess plans page shows the current tier details before any Patreon authorization.
Jess World is the publisher of this guide. If you’re comparing formats, visit the Jess home page for the product overview or open the plans page to see whether the Discord workflow matches what you want.
