What a chat branch is useful for
A branch is an alternate continuation from an earlier point in a conversation. It can help you test a different response, pursue a side plot, or see how a character reacts to another choice while keeping the original path available.
Chub AI’s documentation describes chat trees as a way to branch conversations and preserve alternate paths. Availability and controls differ between platforms, so check the current interface before assuming that branches sync or export in the same way.
A simple workflow for alternate scenes
Create a branch just before the decision that changes the story. Give each path a short label—such as “accept the invitation” and “ask who sent it”—and keep a note of the shared facts that still apply to both.
When you return later, read the last few turns and the branch label before continuing. A compact recap helps you and the model distinguish current events from details that belong only to another path.
A practical checklist
- Branch before the consequential choice.
- Name the branch by the choice or outcome, not “version 2.”
- Keep shared canon separate from branch-only events.
- Export or save an important path if the tool supports it.
Prevent branches from blending together
Models do not necessarily understand that a saved branch is a separate timeline unless the application supplies the relevant conversation context. State the active path in a short recap when switching, and correct a mix-up directly rather than silently accepting it.
If you use lorebooks or memory, be clear about which facts are global canon and which belong to one branch. Conditional world details can be stored separately from permanent character traits; see our guide to lorebooks for the trade-offs.
Check the tool before building a large story
Before investing in a long roleplay, test whether branches can be named, revisited, deleted, and exported. Also find out whether editing an earlier message changes only the current path or affects the broader tree. Those small interface details determine whether branching feels like a creative tool or extra bookkeeping.
For stories you want to continue across days, consider how the companion handles ongoing context as well as alternate paths. Jess is designed for private Discord DMs; its current product information explains that companion workflow and the available plan features.
